Built around 802 AD during the Silla Dynasty, this monastery was responsible for the spread of Buddhism throughout Korea. It contains the Tripitaka, the oldest and best preserved Chinese translation of the full Buddhist Scriptures in the world. These scriptures are carved into 81, 258 wooden block printing plates. This monk holds one of the plates, carved on both sides, and in reverse. This shot was taken while on assignment for the Library of Congress documenting South Korea’s National Treasurers.
