Home to approximately 175 Marshallese today, Wotje Wotje atoll housed Japan’s largest military installation outside of Japan and Okinawa during WWII. At its peak, Wotje Wotje supported 275 native Marshallese, between 6,000-7,000 Japanese soldiers, and approximately 700 Korean slaves—all on less land than a college campus. This photo was taken on Wotje Wotje Atoll in the Marshall Islands while producing a documentary on the islands of Micronesia.
